Ernemann - To modern travel, to modern camera (1913)
Ernemann – To modern travel, to modern camera (1913)

Once Heinrich Ernemann (*1850, +1928) owned a shop for linen goods, trimmings and stockings in Dresden. Ernemann was self-educated about photography and talented for getting into that business. The first products of his company were wooden cameras for professional photographers. Until 1896 the company’s own production of camera parts covered mainly the wooden parts, other parts had to be bought from suppliers. Then Ernemann added four new departments for camera parts production. More about Ernemann Dresden here.

Victor Hasselblad AB is a Swedish manufacturer of medium-format cameras and photographic equipment based in Gothenburg, Sweden. The company is best known for the medium-format cameras it has produced since World War II. Perhaps the most famous use of the Hasselblad camera was during the Apollo program missions when man first landed on the Moon. Almost all of the still photographs taken during these missions used modified Hasselblad cameras. Hasselblad’s traditional V-System cameras remain widely used by professional and serious amateur photographers. One reason is a reputation for long service life and quality of available lenses. Their newer H-System cameras are market leaders, competing with Sinar, Mamiya and others in the medium format digital camera market.

Eastman Kodak No. 2-D 7×11 Camera

Detail
Detail

This camera is a interesting piece and quite uncommon in this 7×11″ size. Unfortunately, it is no longer in good working order and will need to be restored before it can be used. Everything appears to be original (finish, extension rail, holders, etc.). The main issue is that the bellows are in rough shape and will need replacing.

Detail
Detail

There are also some cracks in some of the wood on the camera, one on the rear standard base that spans across it and a good sized crack in the spare wooden plate as pictured in the second to last photograph. The handle is missing as well. From a functional standpoint, the movements work well with exception to the front rise/fall which may need some alignment as it does not want to move the full range.

Detail
Detail

The camera comes with all accessories pictured (extension rail, 4 extra lensboards, 3 films holders, base plate part). The film holders are actually in nice condition and although I’ve not film tested them, they seem to show no signs of not being able to be used. The hinge tape looks good and the wood seem to be in good shape as well. Two have a very tiny, thin crack on the wooden hinge piece but I don’t think it would affect anything. This camera would be a great restoration project for someone and once restored would be a beautiful camera to use!

Voigtländer | Austria

Voigtländer Advertisement
Voigtländer Advertisement

Voigtländer is an optical company founded by Johann Christoph Voigtländer in Vienna in 1756 and is thus the oldest name in cameras. It produced the Petzval photographic lens (the fastest lens at that time: f/3.7) in 1840, and the world’s first all-metal daguerrotype camera (Ganzmetallkamera) in 1841, also bringing out plate cameras shortly afterwards. It set up a branch office in Braunschweig in 1849, moving its headquarters there later. The company issued stock in 1898, and a majority of the shares were acquired by Schering in 1925.

Over the next three decades, Voigtländer became a technology leader and the first manufacturer to introduce several new kinds of product that later became commonplace. These include the first zoom lens for 35mm still photography (36–82/2.8 Zoomar) in 1960 and the first 35mm compact camera with built-in electronic flash (Vitrona) in 1965.

Folmer & Schwing 3 1/4 x 5 1/2 Postcard Speed Graphic. This camera is quite rare and has an uncommon “Postcard” format size of about 3 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches. It was manufactured by Eastman Kodak, Folmer and Schwing Division in 1914-15 (serial number 32142) and is in beautiful condition for it’s age! Amazingly, the shutter curtain still runs very well and although I’m unable to test the speeds for accuracy, the fast speeds are FAST and do not stick open! All speeds sound to be working properly. The focusing knob turns smoothly and the bellows look to be in nice shape as well. All of the leatherette is in excellent condition and shows no peeling or any significant signs of wear. The top viewfinder is clean and clear and the bubble levels still have fluid in them!

Details
Details

This camera features a Voigtlander & Sohn Heliar 18cm (180mm) f4.5 lens. The lens does show a little haze inside, which is very common, but absolutely no fungus, separation or scratches on it! This is a very uncommon lens to find on these cameras. Also included are 6 near mint condition wooden film holders and the original Folmer and Schwing carrying case. The case looks excellent, especially considering it’s almost 100 years old! This camera is a must have for any serious collector and it’s unlikely you’d find one in better condition…museum quality! Note: The shutter does have some small cracks/ light leaks in it, therefore this camera is for collection only!

The Leica III Series by Oskar Barnack

Stanley Kubrick with a Leica III
Stanley Kubrick with a Leica III

The Leica III is a rangefinder camera introduced by Leica in 1933, and produced in parallel with the Leica II series. Several models were produced over the years, with significant improvements. The Leica III uses a coupled rangefinder distinct from the viewfinder. The viewfinder is set for a 50mm lens; use of shorter or longer lenses requires installing an alternate viewfinder on the accessory socket.

The Leica III was Leitz’s response to the introduction of the Zeiss-Ikon Contax. It was also Oskar Barnack’s last design before he died in 1935. Unlike the Leica II, the Leica III includes an extended range of slow shutter speeds. The added slow speeds range from 1/20th of second to one full second.

Guide to Leica III’s:

Leica III 1933–1939 Top shutter speed of 1/500, slow speeds on front dial
Leica IIIa 1935–1940 1/1000 sec. top shutter speed
Leica IIIb 1938–1940 Rangefinder and viewer windos moved closer together for easier framing.
Leica IIIc 1940–1951 Die-cast body, slightly longer, redesigned shutter
Leica IIId 1940–1945 Rare, supposedly only 427 were built
Leica IIIf 1950–1952/53 Some have self-timer and Flash Sync
Leica IIIg 1957–1960 Rare. Change in body configuration to facilitate manufacture, larger and brighter viewfinder

Vintage Box Cameras

Agfa Box Camera 600 Synchro
Agfa Box Camera

The box camera is mechanically simple, the most common form is a cardboard or plastic box with a lens in one end and film at the other. The lenses are often single element designs meniscus fixed focus lens, or in better quality box cameras a doublet lens with minimal (if any) possible adjustments to the aperture or shutter speeds. Because of the inability to adjust focus, the small lens aperture and the low sensitivity of the sensitive materials available these cameras work best in brightly lit daylit scenes when the subject is within the hyperfocal distance for the lens and of subjects that move little during the exposure.

    Brand: Kodak

  • Style: Vintage Film Camera
  • Model: Fisher-Price
  • Special Attributes: Includes neck strap
  • Material: Plastic
  • Condition: In great condition, unsure if it works

Additional information by editorial staff:

Made in the USA by Kodak for toy-maker Fisher-Price, 1984-87. One of the nicest chocolate-bar format 110 cameras – it’s not delicate or making much pretence of high-quality results. This has a small red indicator in the top of viewfinder when the camera is not level (some of us could do with that on some of our more grown-up cameras!). There is also a yellow plastic “mechanical fuse” in the neck cord, to break when the owner catches the cord on something. Fitted for flipflash. Single-speed, single aperture, fixed focus.

SANDS & HUNTER WHOLE PLATE MAHOGANY CAMERA c. 1883 with DALLMEYER RECTILINEAR BRASS LENS NO. 1a and 1 GLASS FILM PLATE HOLDER. FREE POSTAGE! A very rare and highly sought after Sands & Hunter c. 1883 whole plate camera with 1 glass film plate holder and an 1870s Dallmeyer Rectilinear brass Lens No 1a. Serial No. 46665.

Detail
Detail

The camera came from an old photographic family business in London and as far as I know they were the only owners of this camera. It has been sitting for some time, tucked away and not used, probably since the 1940s. Because it has not been used for that length of time, it has remained in exceedingly good condition. The mahogany is in very good condition for a camera that is over 130 years old and it has a very rich, red mahogany shine to it.

The brass is in good antique patina condition as can be seen in the photographs. The focusing screen looks to be the original and is also in good condition. The bellows are in reasonable condition but do have some repair issues, which would be easily repaired as they are in the folds of the leather.

Dallmeyer Rectilinear Lens
Dallmeyer Rectilinear Lens

The Dallmeyer lens, as far as I’m concerned, from my research seems to be a rare lens produced around the 1870s. The brass on the barrel is in good condition for the age of the lens as can be seen in the photograph. The lens optics look clean without any marks. The stops on the wheel are f4, f7.5, f150 and f200.

The camera works in all aspects and as far as I can see, is complete. There are 10 photographs which form part of the description. If you have any questions, please ask. Please note this is an antique and is sold as such – it’s over 130 years old so should be purchased with that in mind for collectors or the connoisseur. If purchased for use, then it would be up to the buyer to make a judgment before purchase. Buy it now on eBay!

Astronaut´s Photography Manual by Hasselblad

Over fifty years ago, a still unknown Walter Schirra entered a Houston photo supply shop and purchased a Hasselblad 500C. The camera was a standard consumer unit with a Planar f/2.8, 80 mm lens. Schirra was a prospective NASA astronaut, one of the brightest and finest pilots of his time, a man with the “right stuff”. Thinking to take his new purchase up on a space shot with him, Schirra stripped the leatherette from the body of the Hasselblad and painted its metal surface black in order to minimize reflections. And when he climbed aboard a Mercury rocket in October 1962, he took his Hasselblad with him. Once in Space, he documented the wonder and awe inspiring beauty he saw around. He took the first space photographs using his consumer model Hasselblad. Thus began the first page in a new chapter in the history of Hasselblad and photography and a long, close, and mutually beneficial cooperation between the giant American space agency and the small Swedish camera manufacturer.

This Astronaut’s Photography Manual has been prepared by Hasselblad in close cooperation with the Training and Man-Machine Divisions at the Johnson Space Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. As a guidebook for the NASA Photography Training Program, it not only describes the operation of the Hasselblad 500 EL/M cameras used on the U. S. Space Shuttle but is also a concise manual on photography to assist astronauts in creating the best possible space photographs.

Here you can download the original Hasselblad NASA Astronaut´s Photography Manual by Hasselblad as a PDF file.

Rollei Collectibles

James Dean with a Rolleiflex
James Dean with a Rolleiflex

Rollei is a German manufacturer of optical goods founded in 1920 by Paul Franke and Reinhold Heidecke in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony, and maker of the Rolleiflex and Rolleicord series of cameras. 1928 saw the production of the first ten prototypes of the legendary twin-lens Rolleiflex. Up until the start of series production in 1929, it underwent a number of technical modifications. The patented twin-lens Rolleiflex was notable for its quality features, which had never been seen before in this category of camera: an all-metal design with precision film guide and one of the best lenses of the day, namely the Tessar. For professional photographers, the first compact reflex camera with six pictures 6×6 on B1-6 roll film became the measure of all things. Current products also include specialty and nostalgic type films for the photo hobbyist market.

Rollei – Classic examples — medium format

  • Rolleiflex 3.5F TLR with 75 mm f/3.5 Planar — as used by David Bailey and Diane Arbus.
  • Rolleiflex SL66 and SL66E SLR with rise and fall lens plane — as used by Brett Weston.
  • Rolleicord Vb — A medium format twin-lens reflex camera.
  • Rolleiflex 2.8GX as used by Helmut Newton.

Rollei – Classic examples — 35 mm

  • Rollei 35 compact original viewfinder (Germany) with 40 mm f/3.5 Carl Zeiss Tessar.
  • Rollei 35S compact camera with 40 mm f/2.8 Zeiss Sonnar made by Rollei.

Contax by Zeiss Icon and Leitz of Wetzlar | Germany

Zeiss Contax I Rangefinder 1932-1936
Zeiss Contax I Rangefinder 1932-1936

Contax was a camera brand noted for its unique technical innovation and a wide range of Zeiss lenses, known for their high optical quality. Its final incarnation was a line of 35 mm, medium format and digital cameras engineered and manufactured by Kyocera, and featuring modern Zeiss optics. While the firm of Ernst Leitz of Wetzlar established the 24 mm × 36 mm negative format on perforated 35 mm movie film as a viable photographic system, Zeiss Ikon of Dresden decided to produce a competitor designed to be superior in every way. The name Contax was chosen after a poll among its employees. Dr. Ing. Heinz Küppenbender was its chief designer.

Made between 1932 and 1936, the original Contax, known as Contax I after later models were introduced, was markedly different from the corresponding Leica. Using a die-cast alloy body it housed a vertically travelling metal focal-plane shutter reminiscent of the one used in Contessa-Nettel cameras, made out of interlocking blackened brass slats somewhat like a roll-up garage door. This complex shutter became the characteristic of the Contax camera and its Super-Nettel derivative. By contrast, the competitive Leica followed the established design of using rubberized fabric shutter curtains wound around rollers, moving horizontally.

In 1936 the Contax II and III models were introduced; the only difference between them was the integral exposure meter on the latter model. They introduced the combined eyepiece for both viewfinder and rangefinder, the shutter speed and film wind knob placed on the top plate, fastest shutter speed at 1/1250 s. and finished in chrome plating. They became very popular among professional photographers, especially photojournalists who demanded high-performance, large-aperture lenses for available-light work and a workhorse. The vertical shutter had both variations in speed, slit and a break that was again a Zeiss first.

Leica Ic, Leica IIIc, Contax I, Contax II Cameras and lenses Leitz Zeiss.

Own a piece of history with the most famous spy camera in history! The Minox-B is a small high-quality portable camera that is small enough to fit in the palm of a hand. It was built by Minox in Germany as the successor to the post-war Minox A. For many years it was the world’s most famous and widely used camera for espionage photography right until the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s. Production started in 1958 and ran to 1969 when it was replaced by the improved Minox C but the later version never surpassed the popularity of the Minox-B.

Like its predecessor, the Minox-A,the body of the camera is made of aluminum. When closed, it measures only 97 x27 x 15 mm, allowing it to be concealed easily, e.g. in the palm of a hand or somewhere in the operator’s clothing. The camera is operated by opened by pulling it outwards from both ends. When closed, the film is advanced to the next position. The image on the right shows a Minox-B camera ready for use. A chain, that also acted as a measuring device, could be attached to one side of the camera, allowing it to be affixed to the user’s clothing.

The negatives are only 8 x 11 mm small. The Minox-B is fitted with avery high quality lens. When used in combination with high-grade film, it allowed black & white images with enormous detail to be obtained from the small negatives. The film strip itself is 9.2 mm wide and is rolled-up on asupply spool inside a small cartridge. It has no sprocket holes and allows 50 images to be taken with a single cartridge. In later years, colour film became available for the Minox-B, but it had signifficantly lower detail than the high-grade black & white film.

The Minox-B was the first Minox subminiature camera to have a built-in lightmeter. The meter didn’t require any batteries as it was based on a seleniumcell. This ensured that the camera was always ready for use, even if it had been stored for a long period of time. Minox-B cameras have been in production from 1958 to 1969 and were by far the most popular of all Minox cameras. Approximately 384,327 units were manufactured of which this one is one of the few survivors.
